Exactly one year ago the Equifax breach was announced. This breach is considered to be the biggest breach in history with hackers having stolen the personally identifiable information (PII) of nearly 147.9 million of the company’s customers, primarily located in the United States.

Given the magnitude of the Equifax breach, the objective of this white paper is threefold:

  • Primarily it is to uncover the technical malfunctions of this case so that companies become better equipped to respond to open source vulnerabilities from the earliest stages.
  • Secondly, the objective is to outline the lifecycle of an open source vulnerability, showing how hackers might use it as an attack vector.
  • Lastly, to lay bare the managerial errors made by Equifax executives so that C-suites can learn how not to behave in moments of corporate crisis.
